Photographed by Robert Johnson, Business Insider.  Oil is cracked to break heavy parts into lighter, more desirable products.  What’s left goes to a tower hotter at the top than the bottom, forcing dense material down while the lighter petroleum products rise.  Hot, high-pressure gas removes more impurities (like sulfur).
