Photographed by Robert Johnson, Business Insider.  Conditioning means mixing oil sand with water.  Oil rises to the top, sand drops to the bottom, and the oil/sand/clay/water middle is transported to HUGE tailings ponds where the remaining oil floats to the top and is skimmed across the surface using floating lines.
