Using Her Head

Shine Your Light This Way

An English professor wrote the words, "Woman without her man is nothing," on the blackboard and directed the students to punctuate it correctly.  Predictably, the men wrote: "Woman, without her man, is nothing," and the women wrote: "Woman! Without her, man is nothing."

May You Find What You're Looking for This Holiday Season!

I thought this card was funny because it illustrates the "your most important job is to help me" attitude males can develop toward females if they aren't ever-vigilant.

Speaking of the Holiday Season...

According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, while both male and female reindeer grow antlers in the summer each year, male reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter, usually late November to mid-December.  Female reindeer retain their antlers till after they give birth in the spring.

Therefore, according to every historical rendition depicting Santa's reindeer, every single one of them - from Rudolph to Blitzen - had to be a girl.

The Christmas Miracle for Those Who Believe in Magic

Most Americans believe the virgin birth is literally true, a Newsweek poll found.  According to the poll on beliefs about Jesus:

bullet93% say they believe Jesus Christ actually lived.
bullet86% say they believe organised religion has a "a lot" or "some" influence over life in the US today.
bullet82% believe Jesus Christ was God or the Son of God.
bullet79% say that, as the Bible says, Jesus Christ was born of the Virgin Mary, without a human father.
bullet67% say they believe that the entire story of Christmas - Virgin Birth, angelic proclamation to the shepherds, Star of Bethlehem and Wise Men from the East - is historically accurate.

bullet63% say there would be less charity if there had never been a Jesus.
bullet62% say they favour teaching creation science in addition to evolution in public schools.
bullet61% say there would be less kindness in the world today if there had never been a Jesus.
bullet59% say there would be less personal happiness if there had never been a Jesus.
bullet58% say there would be less tolerance if there had never been a Jesus.

bullet55% say, in general, that every word of the Bible is literally accurate.
bullet52% believe, as the Bible proclaims, that Jesus will return to earth someday.
bullet47% say there would be more war if there had never been a Jesus.
bullet45% favor teaching creation science instead of evolution in public schools.
bullet15% believe Jesus will return to earth in their lifetime.

bullet11% say American society as a whole very closely reflects true Christian values and the spirit of Jesus.

On the other hand:

bullet40% oppose teaching creation science instead of evolution in public schools.
bullet26% oppose teaching creation science in addition to evolution in public schools.
bullet26% say there would be the same number of wars if there had never been a Jesus.
bullet24% believe the story of Christmas is a theological invention written to affirm faith in Jesus Christ.
bullet21% do not believe that Jesus will return to earth someday.

bullet16% say there would be less war if there had never been a Jesus.
bullet9% say they believe organised religion has "only a little" influence over life in the US today.

For this Newsweek poll, Princeton Survey Research Associates interviewed by telephone 1,009 adults aged 18 and older on 2 and 3 December.  The margin of error is + or - 3 percentage points.

Men’s Most Vital Organ Shrinks with Age

by Buck Wolf

Scientists may have determined why men tell women that size doesn’t matter.  A new study shows that male brains shrink faster with age than female brains.  Researchers at Detroit’s Henry Ford Hospital, using magnetic resonance images, found the shrinkage most pronounced in the frontal and temporal lobes, which control thinking, planning and memory.

“My wife says it’s no surprise to her,” said Dr C Edward Coffey, the chairman of the hospital’s psychiatry department, who led the study.  Between the ages of 65 and 95, men experience an average 30% increase in cerebrospinal fluid around the outside of the brain, an indication of brain shrinkage.  Women, over the same ages, experience a 1% increase in fluid.

Researches say they don’t know whether the greater shrinkage has any effect on how older men think or behave.  But Coffey said the greater brain shrinkage in men may help explain some of the differences between the sexes and other behavioral changes, which will be the subject of future research.

At least now this proves women wrong when they call their elderly husbands “fat heads.”  And maybe science can harness whatever causes a man’s brain to shrink and apply it to his ever-increasing beer gut.

Feminism is generally associated with modern, progressive society.  Yet few people know that ancient Sparta - infamous for its militarism - granted women exceptional rights.  Spartan women could inherit, own, and bequeath property; they were fed and schooled as much as men; they had complete freedom of movement; they married later and could even get away with adultery.  So why would the tough Spartan men allow this to happen?  Upon subjugating its neighbours - whose population vastly outnumbered Sparta’s - Sparta needed its males to focus entirely on training for war and its females to focus on managing the subjugated population and estates.  To give the women sufficient capability and incentive, especially in the absence of men, the men had to grant the extra rights to women, the authors of a new study argue.  However, as in modern times, more autonomy for women was associated with lower fertility, which ultimately led to Sparta being unable to field a large enough army, losing control of its subjugated neighbours, and rescinding the rights of its women.
