Artist: Adolfo Matarelli, Italy, 1855 through 1859

In a transformation deck, the artist transforms the suit signs (hearts, clubs, diamonds, spades) of each card into a picture.  First appearing around 1800, transformation decks have been intriguing and challenging artists ever since.

Almanac is a gorgeous deck from Toscana, a 1996 reproduction of the pack by Cavallini & Company.  Note the use of negative space for the pips.
